A campaign to reduce the number of stray cats in Dubai may cause panic among cat owners, says Feline Friends, a cat re-homing volunteer group.
Dubai Municipality launched a ‘Protection Against Stray Cats’ campaign yesterday asking residents to call in sightings of stray cats. The first 500 callers will receive gifts.
Dr Hashem Fahmi, veterinarian at Dubai Municipality, said the public would be a great help if they could alert the municipality of stray cats roaming their area.
Lesley Muncey, the co-chair of Feline Friends, said the campaign could scare people about spread of cat diseases. “People need to be educated about cats and the diseases they may carry. We are overloaded with cats with over 100 needing to be re-homed,” said Muncey. “We can see a positive side with stray cats and a lot of them have been sterilised.”
