Anyone found manipulating vehicle license plates to avoid paying traffic fines will have a criminal case lodged against them, a senior official at the traffic department has warned.
Three men were recently found to have manipulated plate numbers to avoid traffic fines or divert the fines to someone else, said Lieutenant Colonel Saif Al Mazrouei, Deputy General of the Dubai Traffic Department.
He said the three men had used duct tape to alter the numbers.
“Anyone who does this will have a case opened against them at the police station. Regulations dealing with this offence were implemented at the beginning of this year,” Al Mazrouei said.
The traffic department discovered the violations by monitoring images and running a series of investigations to trace the vehicles. The department then came up with a shortlist of vehicle owners, he said during an interview with Gulf News.
The individuals involved in the most recent violations were an Emirati working in the public sector, a Palestinian working in the health sector, and a Pakistani working in a contracting company, Al Mazrouei said.
He warned vehicle owners against committing such violations, saying “they will be harming themselves as a criminal case will be added to their records”.
“I advise every motorist to abide by the rules and regulations & Finding ways to manipulate the system is not a solution as we constantly upgrade our monitoring system,” he said.
